Upcoming Event: Introduction to GIS for the Digital Humanities, June 13
Please join us in room 130 of Temple University’s Paley Library on Friday, June 13 at 2:00pm for an introduction to GIS for the digital humanities. We will provide a brief historical overview, DH project examples that utilize GIS, essential concepts and hands on exercises with data and tools such as Mapbox and Google Fusion Tables.
This workshop was not originally planned for this spring, but we ended up developing it at the request of Temple faculty for a DH specific program. Temple librarian Greg McKinney also worked with Delphine and I on assembling this workshop. There was interest expressed in us offering a session to Temple library staff and we are able to open up a limited number of seats to PhillyDH or other public members.
Due to the limited number of computers in room 130 we ask that you please add your name to the below signup sheet. We are only able to offer 5 seats at the moment but if we are able to widen that number we will send notice.
Signup sheet, only 5 spots available!:

Job Opportunity: Curator of Digital Collections, CHF
The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) is actively recruiting for the newly created position of Curator of Digital Collections. Founded in 1982, CHF is a collections-based nonprofit organization that preserves the history and heritage of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related sciences and technologies. The collections of rare books, archives, images, fine art, museum artifacts, oral histories, and more are used to create a body of original scholarship that illuminates how we have come to understand the nature of our material world and our interactions with matter and materials. In bridging science with the humanities, arts, and social sciences, CHF is committed to building a vibrant, international community of scholars; creating a rich source of traditional and emerging media; expanding the reach of our museum; and engaging the broader society through inventive public events.
As part of CHF’s strategic plan to build and sustain a digital collection, we seek a dynamic individual to serve as the newly created Curator of Digital Collections. This important position in CHF’s Othmer Library will be responsible for the implementation and stewardship of CHF’s organizationwide digitization efforts, to work with CHF staff to expand the digital outreach of the institution’s collections, and to develop an infrastructure that will establish CHF’s reputation as a center for digitization and digital humanities.
The successful candidate will have an advanced degree and a record of accomplishment in managing digital collections. He/she must have experience in management and supervision, and familiarity with application development and other emerging technologies related to digital asset management, access, and preservation. He/she should also ideally demonstrate a record of success in collaboration with people from a variety of disciplines and professions.
The Curator of Digital Collections will report to the Director of CHF’s Othmer Library and, in coordination with the Director and other CHF staff, be responsible for a strategy for developing CHF’s digital collections. As he/she will lead the implementation of a new digital asset management and preservation system, we hope to attract an individual with the vision to understand the strategic importance of a rich digital collection for a cultural heritage institution and who will be given the wonderful opportunity of shaping the future of digital initiatives at CHF.

Upcoming Event: Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at University of Delaware, Saturday, April 26
The Colored Conventions Project, in conjunction with the University of Delaware Library and the University of Delaware History Media Center, plans to host a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the University of Delaware on Saturday, April 26.
The program will start at 11:00 a.m. with an Intro to Wikipedia Editing Workshop, led by Mary Mark Ockerbloom, the Wikipedian in Residence at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia. Mary will give an overview of topics including Wikipedia culture, the writing style of Wikipedia, and nuts-and-bolts how-tos.
After the Intro Workshop, the Edit-a-thon will begin at 1:15 p.m.
Attendees are welcome to bring their own interests and data for entry in Wikipedia. Attendees who do not bring data of their own are invited to use the biographical and other information resources gathered by the Colored Conventions project, which covers a neglected, critical period of African-American history. The biographical information about historically important men and women of color could help to fill the current deficit of such information on Wikipedia.

Upcoming Event for Cultural Preservation
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) has established the Pennsylvania Cultural Resilience Network to provide resources for effective emergency response and recovery for cultural institutions in Pennsylvania. PCRN will be holding a series of two-part workshops on disaster prevention, planning, and response for museums, archives, and libraries. The program will be coming to Bryn Mawr on June 24 and August 5, 2014. Participants are expected to attend both sessions.
More information and registration forms can be found at the CCAHA website. (Note the website for some reason says that day 2 of the program will be on April 5. The printed flyer gives the correct date of August 15.)
